The Mind of a Medium
Local medium connects family members with dearly departed

At home with her husband and young son, Georgia O'Connor is also surrounded by Aunt Shirley, Grandma Emma, and little Johnny even though she doesn't know who they are.

As a medium, O'Connor talks to people who have crossed over or passed away. The spirits of the deceased come to her to give messages to loved ones.

"I see and talk to dead people and they talk back," O'Connor said. "For a lot of people it's like counseling. They get to resolve stuff they didn't get to resolve before."

Just like Whoopi Goldberg did with Patrick Swayze in the 1990 movie "Ghost", O'Connor can also channel people. She can let a spirit come into her body to talk through her to loved ones, however, she doesn't do that too often, she said.

O'Connor also helps spirits go into the light through paranormal investigations with Lone Star Spirits, which investigates haunting reports like in the 1984 movie "Ghost Busters."

Using mediums is one method Lone Star Spirits uses to find out the reason for the activity, said Pete Haviland, Lone Star Spirits president and lead investigator.

O'Connor has been with the company for about six months and has participated in two paranormal investiagtions, Haviland said. When a medium is called to help investigators they do not have prior knowledge of the haunting. O'Connor has been "very accurate" according to clients, Haviland said.
During one paranormal investigation, O'Connor walked into a room and 60 dead Irishman surrounded her immediately, she said. The men died in the 1800's from "swamp death" or malaria, O'Connor said. When they died their boss threw them in ditches and told their families they ran off. The Irish men wanted to know what happened to them, O'Connor said. Some spirits do not know they are dead, just like in "Ghost."

The NBC hit "Medium" brought O'Connor's world to average Americans through a chilling drama series inspired by the real-life story of research medium Allison DuBois, according to www.nbc.com. On the show, Emmy winner Patrcia Arquette plays DuBois, a young wife and mother who, since childhood, has been struggling to make sense of her dreams and visions of dead people, according to www.nbc.com.

O'Connor says she thinks the show is good and has brought mediums into main stream society. However, the real DuBois saw spirits while awake, not through dreams , as portrayed in the NBC show, O'Connor said. The show probably added the dreams to make mediums more acceptable, O'Connor said.

When O'Connor does readings for clients she takes the first few minutes to clear her mind. She asks her client to think of who they want to contact. With her eyes closed and sometimes with her 16-month-old don Jonah on her lap, O'Connor tells the client what she is hearing or seeing from "the other side." She tries not to interpret what she sees or hears and just tells her client what she is getting.

Readings can be 30 minutes to one hour or longer. The only thing she knows about a client is their first name, O'Connor said. There are no crystal balls, mirrors, or anything spooky, O'Connor said. Just O'COnnor and the client sitting in a room, she said.

Spring resident Mona Andrea found O'Connor online through Lone Star Spirits. She spent two hours in a reading and said the time just "flew by".

"I think she's a wonderful medium," Andrea said. "I've seen a medium before, but she's one of the best I've seen."

O'Connor told Andrea things about her deceased aunt that no one else could know, Andrea said.

Conroe resident Ron Beauchamp was also very impressed with O'Connor's abilities. She connected with three of Beauchamp's deceased relatives.

"It was really accurate and profound," he said about his reading. There's no way anyone would guess this stuff. For anyone to get that many names withou any information is amazing, astounding."

Beauchamp's 56-year-old sister and 30-year-old daughter also did a reading with O'Connor and he said they were "amazed."

O'Connor has been a medium for as long as she can remember. As a child, she would put a chair beside her bed at night so a spirit could watch over her as she slept, O'Connor said.

"I would go and tell my mom about it and she said "Oh really? Who?" O'Connor said. Her mom told her she also saw and talked to those people.

However, seeing the dead wasn't popular among her friendsgrowing up. During sleepovers, O'Connor would tell her friends when she saw a spirit walk in and the girls would get scared and go home, she said.
O'Connor said everyone has an entourage of loved ones around them all the time. The spirits come and go. They can hear people when they talk to them and think about them, O'Connor said...
